Building Courage

books

In Indonesia, water is part of everyday life. Children grow up surrounded by oceans, rivers, swimming pools, rice fields and waterways. Water brings freedom, connection and joy, and it also carries very real risks. Reported figures suggest around 13+ people lose their lives to drowning here every day, and the true number is likely much higher. Changing that has to begin with education children and their caretakers can understand, remember and use, which is why we created Buffalo Pond Books.

Bringing water safety to life. Buffalo Pond Books are a series of engaging stories that help children build a safer relationship with water. Rather than teaching through fear, each story introduces water safety through familiar characters, emotional regulation, everyday adventures and situations children recognise from their own lives. Through moments of excitement, hesitation, bravery and reflection, children learn to move safely in and around water, stay close to trusted adults, pause before entering, ask for help when they need it, listen to their bodies, stay calm when something unexpected happens, regulate big emotions and make smart choices without fear or shame. They also learn by watching the characters do it, which is how a lot of this knowledge actually transfers. The stories show that being brave doesn't mean taking unnecessary risks. Sometimes bravery means stopping, speaking up, or asking an adult for support.

Stories children recognise. Water safety education works best when it feels relevant. Each story is set in a culturally familiar place where water is part of daily life and drowning is a genuine risk, so children see themselves, their families and their own communities in the characters. The books follow children exploring, learning and making decisions in the environments they meet every day, including oceans, rivers, pools and flood zones. They're written for children aged 6 to 11, and for the parents, teachers, swimming instructors and trusted adults who care for them.

Learning without fear. Fear is a poor teacher. It makes children freeze, hide mistakes and avoid asking questions, all of which make them less safe rather than more. Our approach builds awareness, confidence and calm decision-making instead. The stories create openings for real conversations: What do you do if the conditions change? Who can you ask for help? What does your body feel like when you're unsure? How can adults help keep children safe? Those conversations teach children that water safety isn't about being a perfect swimmer. It grows through knowledge, supervision, practice and learning together.

One story can save a life. Our hope is that these books spark conversations, encourage safer choices, and give children knowledge they carry with them whenever they're near water.

More than a swimming lesson. Swimming skill is only one part of drowning prevention. Children also need to understand risk, recognise changing conditions, stay close to trusted adults and know what to do when they feel uncertain. Stories carry those lessons beyond the pool and into homes, schools and communities, reaching children who may never get a formal lesson. Alongside the books we share free swimming and safety materials and classroom resources for teachers, so the learning has somewhere to go next.

Support us. You can bring water safety education directly into classrooms by donating to have Buffalo Pond Books delivered to local schools. Donations help us reach more schools and run classroom sessions where children explore the stories, ask questions and learn practical ways to stay safer in and around water.
