How Buffalo Pond’s Scholarship Program Works (And Why It Matters)

Over the past two years, Buffalo Pond’s Scholarship Program has provided structured, safe water education to 150 children through fully funded 10-week cohorts. Designed to remove financial barriers, the program combines low instructor ratios, transportation support, and inclusive access, ensuring that opportunity in the water is determined by need, not income.

Expanding Safe Access to Water Education for Local Children

Two years into our journey, one thing has become crystal clear: when children are given the opportunity to build confidence in the water, the impact goes far beyond swimming skills. It builds courage. It builds trust. It builds futures.

As a coastal region, water is part of everyday life. Yet access to formal water safety instruction remains limited for many families. Our scholarship program sits at the heart of this mission.

Entirely funded through dedicated fundraising efforts, the program removes financial barriers for local families by covering operational costs, venue access, and transportation, ensuring that every selected child can participate fully and safely.

What the Community Program Looks Like

The scholarship program operates in structured 10-week blocks designed for progressive skill acquisition and safety development.

Program DetailDescription
Duration10 consecutive weeks
Cohort SizeApproximately 20 children
Instruction RatioMaximum 5:1
Focus AreasWater safety, foundational skills, independent movement
Support IncludedTransportation, venue access, essential equipment

This low teacher-to-student ratio is non-negotiable. By ensuring there are no more than 5 students per teacher, we maximize safety in the water and allow for individualized attention, ensuring appropriate skill building for every child.

The Learning Progression

Over the course of the 10 weeks, the children follow a progressive format designed to build both confidence and competence:

  1. Movement Through the Water: Developing the fundamental ability to move independently and safely across short distances.
  2. Familiarization & Water Safety: Initial focus is on getting comfortable in the water and understanding fundamental safety rules and concepts.
  3. Understanding & Skills: Progressing to basic water movements, including breath control, kicking, paddling, and floating.

The progress witnessed within these 10 weeks is truly amazing. Beyond the technical skills, the children have a blast, leaving with increased confidence and a positive relationship with the ocean environment. Where appropriate, they also receive essential equipment such as goggles and rash shirts to support their learning journey.

More Than Lessons

Over the past two years, we’ve witnessed transformations that go far beyond technique. Children who once hesitated at the shoreline now enter the water smiling. Parents who once worried now watch with pride. Local leaders increasingly recognize water education as essential, not optional.

Where needed, participants receive essential equipment such as goggles and rash shirts, small details that ensure dignity, comfort, and equal footing in the learning process.

In just two years, Buffalo Pond has supported:

  • 150 children completing a full 10-week learn-to-swim program
  • 50 ongoing scholarship lessons, sustaining continued access
  • 150 students from the Islamic Deaf Society receiving adapted water education
  • Over 500 pairs of goggles distributed to community members
  • 50+ First Aid and CPR programs strengthening overall water safety awareness

These figures represent more than participation, they reflect sustained engagement, inclusive programming, and growing community trust.

Why This Program Requires Ongoing Support

We are a social enterprise and profits support free community swimming lessons and the operational costs of our business. Delivering high-quality, low-ratio instruction in a coastal environment carries real costs. Transportation logistics, trained instructors, safety standards, and venue access all require sustained funding.

The scholarship model ensures that participation is determined by need, not income. As demand from local families continues to grow, so does the need for consistent financial backing.

Every donation directly contributes to:

  • Funding a child’s full 10-week participation
  • Maintaining safe instructor ratios
  • Covering transportation access
  • Expanding future program cycles

Your support enables structured, supervised water education for children who would otherwise not have access.
